A very handy bench tool for the modeller Mar 12, 2011
By Anubis As an avid scale modeller, I had been faced with the need for a precision filing aid for some time. Each time I needed to file a hole in a sheet of styrene or thin metal without distorting the material, I had to use the edge of my bench, which was not entirely satisfactory.
Enter the bench pin. This handy thing is the modern equivalent of a tool that jewellers and metal workers have been using for centuries, for fine and detailed work on rings and brooches.
This one is manufactured in India, and consists of a block of pine wood, with an appropriately spaced slot, which allows the work to be held securely with one hand, while the filing is done through the slot with the other.
The tool is firmly attached to the workbench with the supplied metal clamp. This is a little on the flimsy side, to my way of thinking, but seems to benefit from spacing out with a small wooden block between it and the work bench.
All in all, a very handy product for the jeweller or the modeller.
