Excellent set of tap and die Sep 19, 2009
By G-Man Restoring an old Datsun, this has been invaluable fixing rusted nuts and bolts. The case leaves a little to be desired. Doesn't hold the items secure, so sometimes, even with the case closed, the items get scrambled. Just pit a small piece of foam rubber on top before closing the case, and all is good.

Broken tap on 2nd use... Apr 26, 2010
By Matt W.

I would not get this if you are planning on using it on anything other than light duty aluminum jobs. As other people said, the case is poorly designed, and when I opened the kit for the first time everything was all over the place. Worked great the first time when I used this on aluminum, but today I tried using it on steel. I was tapping a completely perfect hole, was the correct size and everything, I even used oil to help lessen the stress on the bit, and guess what? It snapped off (more shattered off) in the hole. I wasn't even putting much pressure on it when it happened. I heard a weird creaking/cracking noise, so I tried to ease the bit out, and that's when it fell apart in the hole. It wouldn't be the end of the world if the bit was the only thing broken, but I now have a $40 clutch plate that is ruined (plus hours of time wasted trying to get a hardened steel piece of garbage out of a hole). This whole thing no longer seems like a good deal, since I will now have to buy a new tap and die set, plus a new clutch plate, and just threw away $30ish on a tap and die set I am afraid to use on anything else. I would not recommend this product to anyone... be careful.

Very Poor Jan 06, 2011
By Bruce C. Kiley This is a horrible item. I used the tap to do 1 bolt whole clean out and the handle broke. It just would not hold the equipment. The 8MM had a milling defect and was not usable. Beware, if you want to do something here and there no problem, but I had a few bolt whole to "re-tap", not tap, and it just was soo poor a quality I had to return it.

Good homeowner's type kit Mar 05, 2010

I'm rather pleased with the looks of the kit. At this price point, I'm not expecting industrial quality, but it should work fine for casual use by the average home owner, like me. It's well stocked with most of the sizes I've been seeing lately, so it should work fine. The storage/carrying case isn't heavy duty either, but it's much better than the cases for many tools, especially expensive tools, that I've gotten.
My only complaints are rather minor. The case isn't marked for the various pieces, so you have to eyeball guess the size until you find the one you want. The average homeowner isn't going to have those sizes locked in his brain like a mechanic would. Secondly, the case doesn't hold the pieces, especially the taps, in place. When my kit arrived, only the very largest taps were still in their places. The vast majority were scattered throughout the box, most landing in a heap at the bottom. So, if they were sharp when they started, they certainly aren't as sharp now. There was a very thin, transparent "divider" between the 2 sections, which isn't strong enough to hold the pieces in place. I fixed the problem, by cutting the outer display carton to fit, using the thin piece as a template. The thin cardboard from the display carton is just thick enough to work, holding all of the pieces in place nicely.
In summary, this is a light duty, light use kit that should do the average homeowner very well.
Reasonable Value - Not Professional Quality Feb 03, 2012
By K. Green These taps and dies are really not bad considering the bargain price, and should do fine for most hobbiest mechanics. They are not a professional grade set, but they cost a lot less than those sets too. My specific note about the quality is that there was debris or something, it seemed almost like paint or overrun from some protective coating, in the cutting threads on several of the taps, which I was able to easily knock out with the included screwdriver. At first I thought that one of the taps (the first one I needed too) was going to be unusable, but the threads cleaned up just fine and it worked out very well for cleaning the threads on a rusted nut I was working with. Overall I would recommend this set for anybody that needs taps and dies to use occasionally and not expect these to hold up to daily or heavy use.
