5Excellent value for the money and far handier than you might expect  Sep 07, 2009 By Jerry Saperstein
I actually bought this mostly for fun. Consider that just a few years ago, a product like this would have cost thousands of dollars.

In actuality, the product has proven to be very useful around the house. I use it far more often than I would have thought - had I even thought of it beforehand - for checking out computers and other electronic equipment for overheating and hot spots. It is also useful for checking the operating efficiency of air conditioning and heating outlets in the home. And, finally, it has consider value as a teaching aid for kids - just make sure you don't let the youngsters "play" with it, the low-powered laser is still a danger.

I have no means to determine how accurate it actually is, but it seems to be reasonably close to the mark. I certainly haven't gotten any clearly weird readings from it.

Excellent value for the money and far handier than you first might expect it to be.

Jerry

5does the job...  Jun 05, 2008 By grumpy old man
i bot this thermometer for use in the kitchen...inspired by alton brown who uses one on his food network cooking show. it's a great way to make sure my skillet is the perfect temperature for the pancake batter. i'm very happy with it.

4Good - But Not Accurate  Jan 03, 2010 By Radar Tech
This Handheld Infrared Thermometer works OK, but with one limitation - the accuracy is not within its supposed tolerance of (+- 3F) or (2%) reading. My temperature readings on non-metal surfaces were consistantly off (read too high) by (4),(5), or even more degrees (Fahrenheit). On the lower scale towards freezing temperatures, the temperature readings were even worse. All of my test temperature measurements were taken while I was positioned within the best distance-to-spot size ratio and field-of-view. Everything else about the Handheld Infrared Thermometer is good. Perfect weight and the LCD blue backlight display is really nice. The red laser can be turned on or off to further conserve battery life.

After you press the trigger, the device turns on and your temperature readings will show up on the lighted display for as long as you keep your finger on the trigger. After releasing the trigger, (5) seconds later the lighted LCD display will shut off. After 10 seconds if no further trigger action is used, the device will shut off completely. I like the idea that the display stays lit while you are pressing the trigger. This allows you to see multiple temperature readings or variations in low lit or dark areas.

Other thoughts: The 9V battery comes already installed (wrapped in cellophane) in the device. Just remember to open up (slide open) the battery compartment and remove the battey cellophane wrapping and re-insert observing proper polarity. Othrwise you will think that the Handheld Thermometer is not functioning when you first get the device and press the trigger.

You get what you pay for. For just checking average (ball park) temperatures this would be OK. I wouldn't use it for anything else requiring accuracy. Also remember, when using Non-Contact Infrared Thermometers to measure temperatures on metal surfaces or glass, your readings will turn out to be the most inaccurate. Materials that are highly reflective such as metal or glass will yield innaccurate results. If you do measure temperatures on metal or glass and you require more accuracy, put masking tape on an area, then take your measurements off of the taped area - if temperatures permit (not too high as to burn the tape). Measurements on everything else except metal or glass should be within an acceptable range. Your device's accuracy may vary (better or worse).

5Great for school projects  Aug 29, 2009 By Camper in NC
Got this for our high school kids to do their science projects. Was easy for them to use and expedited getting the data for their projects. Works extremely well. There was variation from reading to reading as shown in the description of +/- 2%, but it was expected. Liked the 8:1 ratio, so the reading could be further away at times. Other models with the 1:1 ratio had to have the thermometer gun too close for measuring. Kids look forward to doing more projects using this device.

4Does the job, but not as expected - lack of support material  Jul 15, 2009 By Colonel Sanderz
It does the job, but it's not as easy as I expected it to be. I don't know if I'm using it wrong, but if I am, it's not obvious and there is a distinct lack of support material (even on the Web). It takes accurate temperatures, but I only have about half-a-second to aim with the laser before it takes the temperature - I don't really have a chance to move it around with the laser on before it takes the reading. The reading sits on the screen for 30 seconds before I can use it again. It's also supposed to help you find hot spots by scanning an area continuously, but I'll be dammed if I can get it to do that - again, the documentation leaves one wanting.
