Amazing bolt cutters, simply the best cut for the buck. Jul 16, 2010

The Neiko Tools heavy duty 4,000lb bolt cutter is no joke. It is a serious tool built in the solid style of tools from the past that can stand the test of time. Solid, heavy, and absolutely the type of bolt cutter Tony the toolman recommends.
My wife had purchased a large Master Lock for our outside shed; it was the type where you can choose your own combination. We did not realize the tumbler it used has to be flat, the first time we put the lock on the shed vertical instead of horizontal the lock would not open. Time for some bolt cutters! I went to Lowe's and found some average bolt cutters for $60.00, I thought that was a bit much, so imagine my surprise to see these bad boys at such a good price on Amazon. They are larger, heavier, and more solid than any cutters I've handled from Lowe's or Home Depot. More importantly they sliced through a large Master Lock like it was made of water! I had the job done in less time than it took to get them out of the box.
Granted you have to have strong hands and forearms to get the most out of these in order to hold them level and close them smoothly, but if you do you will exert little effort cutting through jobs that would make you sweat with any other pair of bolt cutters I've owned. I'm very impressed with what you get for the money here.

Affordable bolt cutters that get the job done Jun 09, 2011
By E. Cheng These are great bolt cutters at an affordable cost. As a resident manager of a large apartment building these bolt cutters have come in handy on countless occasions. Since my building is located in a college town, every year I have to deal with abandoned bicycles that students leave locked to poles and railings when they move out or when they lose keys to the lock. You can imagine how a dozen rusting bicycles locked to stairway railings and poles creates an eyesore.
These bolt cutters will cut through padlocks and and chains like butter. For U-shaped locks it takes considerable more strength and time but these bolt cutters will still get the job done. They're pretty heavy to carry around but if they were made out of a lighter alloy the cutting strength just wouldn't be the same.

It's really HEAVY duty! Jul 15, 2011
By Marine5958 I just got this bolt cutter yesterday and I decided to cut a chromed steel chain link that was 3/8 of an inch thick. The hardest thing about cutting through the link of chain was that when I put it into the blades I had to open it far enough that I couldn't just use my pectoral muscles and biceps to do the squeeze. I ended up putting one handle on my chest and my hands on the outer handle and pulling in with everything I got. The chain snapped with a bang (and a spark) and flew all over the place but it was cut clean through.
I also tried cutting an old rusty u-lock (I lost the keys) from Bell. The u-lock bar was really thick (at least 1/2 inch) so when I got the bar into the blades I couldn't pull them down even with one bar to the floor while the rest of my body weight 175lbs on the other handle (I was literally trying to balance myself on that one handle). It did leave a 1-2 millimeter groove on the u-lock bar after about 3 or 4 minutes of jumping on one of the handle bars but I'm guessing it wouldn't be possible to cut through a u-lock with just this bolt cutter.
The bolts that hold the blades in place are really tight and I found it rather difficult to open and close this cutter at first. I just used a little bit of Endust and sprayed the joints and it's been quite a bit easier to operate them.
After cutting the chain, the small bit of chrome on the blade tips were rubbed off due to the tremendous pressure. I did not see any further damage other than the rubbed off chrome. The cosmetic damage has not affected the performance of the cutters.

Built to work, built to last Jun 21, 2009

They may be a little on the heavy side, but I wager it's tough to make a good 30" inch bolt cutter much lighter. Well-designed and balanced for maximum bite and leverage, this is one of the better bolt cutters I've seen, and believe me, I've seen a few. Cut with confidence!

Works fine but nothing amazing Sep 30, 2010

I bought these bolt cutters to trim heavy metal chains.
They worked adequately for the intended purpose. But I would not say they "sliced through like butter" as in the other reviews.
I am surprised by the complaints about these being too heavy to lift comfortably. While they are heavy, it takes far greater strength to close them fully if you are cutting something at all substantial. So if you can't lift them, you probably have no chance at all of closing them! For my application, I placed the cutters on the floor with one handle on the floor and one in the air, and used my body weight to bring down the handle. I could have closed it just using my arms, but it would have been more work.
I have used cutters before on thicker materials with less effort. I recently used a pair to cut a very heavy Master lock that sliced through fairly easily. The reason I gave this only three stars is that the other cutter I used sliced through a heavier object more easily. Perhaps the difference is the length of the handle? Or the sharpness of the blades perhaps?
For reference, I was cutting a medium-thick chain--the type you use to hang a swing on a swing set. If this is in fact more difficult to cut than a Master Lock (and maybe they are since the material is different) then go ahead and mentally add a star or two to my review. Also if it helps to put my review in context: I am an athletic woman and I do recreational weight lifting (definitely not body building) and other sports involving upper body; In general I'm about as strong as the average non-athletic guy but less strong than a guy who lifts weights or works in construction.
Tip on using these:: I found they worked effectively when the portion to be cut was as far into the blades as it can go. The cutters did not slice through my chain if I used just the tips--it made a mark, but didn't cut through.
