Lacks precision and manufacturing quality May 31, 2010

"Woodworker Johnny"
I bought this because I did not see the need for a table drill press to do wood work. Years ago, I had a hand drill stand that was heavy and precise, converting a good hand drill into a real drill press. In my view and from working experience, this drill stand is almost useless, except that it allows for somewhat straight drilling; it is built way to light. The collar has ~ 2/32 inch lateral play, such that it is impossible to drill a hole in wood exactly at the marked position - the drill bit will wander to the softest spot in the wood in this 2/32 inch area. The retracting spring is so weak, that it will have a hard time to hold a heavier hand drill in up position after a while. The ruler for drilling depth is cheap plastic built to just break off some day upon impact. The lever does not allow for smooth operation, and the column is just too thin and too weak. On my unit, the cast iron stand had a chipped corner. In summary: this unit looks like some of those stands formerly sold by manufacturers like METABO, but it is nothing alike. My advice: spend $ 150 for a little table drill press and save $ 75 spend for a very unsatisfactory tool.
