Less secure than I thought Nov 11, 2011
By Bela Lubkin
"propeller head"
I bought this thinking I was getting 35 "security bits" -- which I think of as those bits with the holes in the middle so they're compatible with "security heads" that have a pin in the middle.
Well, this set only has a total of 6 security bits: Security Torx (AKA Tamper-Resistant Torx) in sizes #10, 15, 20, 25, 27, 30. The rest are perfectly ordinary bits that you already have in 12 other kits.
I was disappointed, but in the end it was surely my fault for not having looked carefully at the picture, nor read the description. It is otherwise an OK kit.
Since I did a bunch of research to figure out what I *really* wanted to buy after this disappointment, here's what I found.
1. If you just wanted the "Security Torx" bits:
$3 Torx' own brand 7pc Torx driver security bit set --
7 torx tamper proof: #10, 15, 20, 25, 27, 30, 40
2. If you wanted a kit with Torx & Hex security bits plus a few others:
$4 SE 7519SD 33pc security bit set/$4 SE VTBT5 33pc security bit set/$7 TEKTON 2930 33pc security bit set/$14 Fuller Tool 816-3802 34pc security bit set --
9 torx tamper proof: #8, 10, 15, 20, 25, 27, 30, 35, 40 3 torq-set: #6, 8, 10 6 hex SAE tamper proof: 5/64, 3/32, 7/64, 1/8, 9/64, 5/32 (in) 6 hex metric tamper proof: 2, 2.5, 3, 4, 5, 6 (mm) 4 spanner: #4, 6, 8, 10 4 tri-wing: #1, 2, 3, 4
3. If you wanted a 100-bit kit with most of the common and moderately obscure "security" bits:
$12 Neiko RI-10029A 100pc security bit set/$19 Anytime Tools AT200430 101pc security bit set/$19 Anytime Tools AT200453 101pc security bit set --

$26 TEKTON 2840 105pc security bit set is similar to the above 100pc sets, with these changes:

$27 Anytime Tools AT200421 101pc security bit set is also similar, with these changes from the gaggle (& see[...] hex SAE tamper proof: ADD 3/16, 7/32, 1/4 (in) hex metric: ADD 4.5, 7 (mm) hex metric tamper proof: ADD 7, 8; REMOVE 2.5 (mm) phillips: REMOVE duplicate #2s pozidriv: REMOVE duplicate #2s slotted: REMOVE 2.5, 4, 6 (mm) spanner: ADD #12 torx: ADD #5, #6; REMOVE #35 torx tamper proof: ADD #5, #6 tri-wing: ADD #5 ADD phillips ACR reduced #PR1, #PR2 oddball bits: ADD "eyebrow bit"; drywall stopper; 2mm triangle bit;
I expect I will end up getting one of the B000NPUJTO TEKTON 2840 or B005YCX8HG Anytime Tools AT200421 kits.
B0023QTESS $37 Titan 16148 148pc security bit set looks like a nice unit w/148 bits, including possibly most of the 100-piece kits + a bunch of long shank versions of the most popular ones. But it eats a big shovelful of FAIL for not listing its contents in a useful manner. (Even Amazon wants to punish it by limiting me to 10 live ASIN links per review...)

NOTE: prices will obviously vary after this is posted. Also, the units in question vary in other ways (some claim to be made out Vanadium Steel, others out of used mud; some have nice ratchet drivers etc.)
